What the women have to say about beards:

Since growing my beard, I have asked the opinions of a good number of the ladies. Most of their comments have been favorable, and some have even thought I looked smarter. I asked one friend, and she said she was trying not to look at it. Overall, they were very positive about the beards. The one general theme was that they liked beards on any face that they didn’t have to kiss.

Don’t judge me:
We have a rule around our house, which is that we simply don’t make judgments of other people. The only time that rule is broken is when I do something stupid, and then all bets are off.

Style and fashion:

Golf clothes from the 70s & 80s were like women. They were very expensive and make you look like a clown.

Whiskers as an art form:

For years, I have seen men create fantastic and often outrageous art work from facial hair. I finally decided to take up the challenge of growing a brush. Avon was not exactly thrilled with the idea, but as usual, she was semi-tolerant with my hair-brained idea. I thought it would make me look smarter. So far, that hasn’t worked out so well. I don’t look any smarter, but I do look like someone who would like to look smarter. I do feel smarter and go around misquoting Shakespeare and Harry Truman. You ought to hear me say, “Alas, poor Uric, I knew his smell”, or, “The bus stops here.”

Ya Gotta Love the Girls:
Many of you may not know it, but I volunteer as a tour guide at the Rose O’Neill home and museum a couple of days a month. Rose was the creator of the Kewpie Doll and many many other accomplishments. Google her.
Last Friday, I was guiding a group of ladies from a tour bus through the home and found myself telling them how in the early 1900s, Rose led the trend for ladies to wear looser clothing and doing away with corsets. A shocking move, I’m sure. And I told them, as I always do, “You ladies can thank Rose O’Neill for the comfortable clothing you now wear.” And as usual the all said “Thank you Rose.”
The ages of this group of about 30 women ran between 70 and 90, so they all had some experiences with fashion trends and as usual they started telling their stories. At that point, I usually try to get them moving on. But one of the older ladies started telling about her grandmother telling her of when they wore long dresses and multiple petticoats. When she began telling about the rubber strips they had sewn into the waist bands of their underwear, I was getting nervous.
She told how Granny went out on a date one evening with her boyfriend and another couple, and as they were coming out of the theater, she felt a snap. The next thing she felt was her drawers sliding down to her ankles. Someone asked “What did she do?”
The speaker said, “She just stepped out of them under that long dress and walked away cool and comfortable.”

The rest of the tour was a hoot as you can imagine. They cut loose and turned my ears red a few times, but I guess that means they had accepted me as just one of the girls.

Hard times:
In every golf tournament I’ve ever played, you had the option to buy Mulligans (do-overs, for the non golfers). I always took a few; they’re only a couple of bucks and the money generally goes for charity. Actually, I like the idea of Mulligans because it’s like legal cheating or an okay sin. I’ve just recently noticed that pro golfer, Jason Day never takes a mulligan. Do you think that since he’s married now with a kid and another on the way; things might be getting a little tight in the wallet?

Bygone menus:
When I was a kid, we had simple meals, all from the 3 major food groups. There was an entrée of cholesterol, a side dish of starches, and another of carbohydrates. This didn’t change unless someone had a good day on the river, and then there was fish. My mother’s spice rack consisted of salt and pepper, and richer flavors were provided by mustard and ketchup. You can imagine my shock first time a waitress asked me if I wanted sour cream on my baked potato. For one thing, potatoes were supposed to be mashed or fried – not baked. I’m glad I tried it, but just listen to yourself say those words, “sour cream”. Now that’s disgusting! If my mother had tried to serve my anything called sour cream when I was 9, I would have been out of there and they wouldn’t have seen me until I could vote.

Want some cheese with that whine:

When a spouse, good friend, or someone of importance is having a bad day and groaning about it, we seem to have little tolerant sympathetic comforts that we hand out. We say things like, “Aw, poor baby, It’ll be all right, or You’ll feel better if you just forget about it.” When thing go wrong for me like falling off a roof or being buried under a truck load of gravel, Avon just shakes her head and says, “Life ain’t easy for a boy named Lou.”

Dr. Love:
This letter just came in from Bob in Keokuk, Iowa.
Dear Dr. Love: My wife is learning to play the bagpipe. It’s the only thing she has on her mind, and all she thinks about it day and night. What can I do? Bob
Dear Bob: Get a plaid skirt, learn to jig, and let nature take her course. DL

Old golfers never die – they just misplace their putters:
About 10 years ago, I was playing golf in Gulf Port, Mississippi. My group was following a foursome of 4 elderly gentlemen, and they were not especially breaking any speed records. They were all in their 80s except for Ben who was well into his 90s. We caught up to them on one hole and had to wait while they cleared the green. Ben was the last to putt out, and when he finished, he slowly trudged across the green to the cart where he sat down. One of the other players, who had watched him and waited until he was seated, yelled from the green, “Ben! Ben, you’ve done it again!” At which time, Ben got out of the cart, took the flag stick from his bag, and drug it back to the green, where he took his putter out of the hole, and replaced it with the flag.
The rest of my group was getting impatient, but I figured Ben didn’t have that many games left in him, so have fun old fella.

One more travel story:

While looking for somewhere to have lunch in Jackson, WY, I spotted a place called Billy’s Big Burger. It was right out of the 50s, complete with lunch counter and stools all behind a large front window. As we were getting ready to go in, a young lady of some width walked up to the counter. The woman had a rear about the size of Massachusetts, which she plopped down on one of the front window stools exposing a humungous plumber’s crack. I told Avon, “I don’t know how big the burgers are, but look at the size of those buns.”

The name says it all:
There are some people who are born to be what they are in life. I once saw a sign that read, Dr. Hertz, DDS – I think I’d change my name. We have a chiropractor here in town named Gentle – no pain no gain. Some of my favorites are sports figures particularly baseball players. For instance, there was the great mustachioed pitcher Rollie Fingers, who made a pretty good living with his fingers. One of the current princes of the long ball is Prince Fielder, who is also a first class fielder.

One more name:

Although, not a name that was specific to his chosen life’s work, Catfish Hunter has always left me a little bewildered. Wouldn’t a catfish hunter more likely be called a fisherman?

More movie tough guys:

Both James Cagney and George Raft were without doubt movie tough characters. Both, however, had other plans for their Hollywood careers. Cagney and Raft were what was called “Hoofers”. Each had dreamed of being dancing movie stars. I doubt that either one ever considered acting seriously. How things change with time. I doubt that you would find too many tough guys studying dance at Missouri State U – I didn’t the last time I was in the area.

My movie tough guy:
I took a little Facebook quiz to find out what movie tough guy I would be like. The answer came back as Tony Montana from the movie “Scarface” starring Al Pachino. Since the last time I went to a movie, it was to see John Wayne's “True Grit”. I didn’t know who Tony Montana was. I barely knew who Al Pachino was. Although, after doing a little research, this Montana person was hard core mean and evil. Now I’m afraid to be in the same room with me now.

New Kind of Restaurant:

We have a new cross-culture restaurant, which recently opened in town. It’s a Chinese Mexican place called Fernando’s Wok. It sounded pretty exciting – maybe too exciting. I tried their special Sweet and Sour Turbulent Chicken Casadia - to go. It was and I did!

Cave Cuisine:
Our earliest ancestors were faced with the problem of going where no one had gone before. Therefore, he had the task of eating foods that no one had ever eaten before. Imagine the surprise when he found that chewing on poison ivy made his teeth itch. Or, what it was like to eat a whole cucumber and burp like a foghorn – cave man invents the tuba. Then imagine his surprise when he stuffs himself with wild beans – combine that with a cucumber on the side, and cave man invents musical harmony. Bring in enough friends and they could have an orchestra.

Clocks Say the Darndest Things:

As I was waking up the other morning my body was telling me to get up and get the kinks and little pains worked out. My mind was telling me, “Don’t listen to that fool I’m the brains of this outfit.” So I rolled over and looked at the clock, which was telling my mind in big red letters that it was SOY! “What,” my mind shouted, “does that mean? Soy what?” By that time my mind was awake and I looked again at the clock, and it told me in those same big blocky red digital figures that it was 5:04 or SOY if you are a bit foggy headed. I have decided not to pay any attention to my brain; it can’t even tell time.

From the Editor:
Dear Friends, as summer flips into fall, I have to stop and reflect on the changing of the seasons. A moment please – I’m still reflecting. Okay, I’m finished. Enjoy your fall. You folks in California and Florida – enjoy your sameness. LB editor

Swimming in a River:
While watching 2 boys swimming in a river a British travel writer wrote: “All the time, although you are unaware of it, your brains are storing every fraction of these moments. …you will always remember it although the names and faces of women you have known will become like ghosts in your minds.”

H.V. Morton, 1933

* * * * * *
A Memory of Swimming in a River:
During an outing to the St. Francis River my brother, and I were fortunate enough to coax our sister (the princess) out to a pile of rocks and gravel in the middle. We had to tow her out because she couldn’t swim a stroke. When we got her firmly established on a big rock we left her stranded there presumably forever. She set up a howl that could be heard in Poplar Bluff and our dad, Braddy, had to go get her. We got in some trouble, but Braddy was easy; I’ll bet he was just sorry that he was too grown up to have pulled that stunt. The princess has forgiven us; she knows we wouldn’t have left her out there for more than a week.
H.V. Morton was right.

Things that Make Me Smile:
            * I love Polish weddings; those big noisy friendly affairs with lots of food, drink, and music. My aforementioned sometimes friend, Pottsy and I crashed one in E. St. Louis one time. Pottsy had the nerves of a cat burglar. We were soon found out, and were told to enjoy ourselves, but not to leave with anything we didn’t come in with, which meant anything from the gift table or anything female.
Several years later I was a minor role player in another Polish wedding – Avon’s. I thoroughly enjoyed that one too despite the hangover. The thing that makes me smile the most about ours is I don’t ever have to do it again.

            * I also smile when I have been reading and my eyes suddenly pop open and I discover that I had dosed off. The real pleasure of this is when I realize that I hadn’t missed a thing and can pick up right where I left off or even get an instant replay of the last few paragraphs. Unlike those Teebo or Teevo things my process is low tech, extremely reliable, and free. I especially smile about the free part.

What, me worry:
I was in the check out line at Wal-Mart the other day, when the old fella in front of me turned around and told me that it was his birthday, and that he was 92 years old. I wished him a happy birthday and told him that he didn’t look a day over 91. He insisted that he was definitely 92. When he had gone, the checker said that he came in every day for some little thing, and that he never seemed to let things bother him. He never seemed to worry about anything. I thought, “The man has lived through the depression and probably fought in WW-II. He’s watched the Korean, Viet Nam, Bosnian, Granada, Gulf-I and Gulf-II, Afghanistan, and the Cold War on his TV. He’s seen the stock market climb and plunge, banks collapse, and the Twin Towers come down. He had seen it all, so what was there left to worry him?”

Where was I?
Somehow, I stumbled and fumbled through the 70s and 80s without really paying attention to trends and market shares. Oh, I knew the basics, like Wal-Mart was a good investment, and GM and Ford made good stuff. However, when a woman I knew started telling me about the new Toyota Camry she had just bought, as if it was something I was supposed to know about, I thought – Huh?
I knew about Japanese cars. I knew that Datson had changed their name to Nissan and made a decent little truck and a hot little sports car. I also knew that Honda was well made and a gas miser. But Toyota? All I knew about them was they made a little windup toy they called a Crayola. Camry, what did that mean, and how good can it be? Now they tell me that the Koreans are making cars – maybe I needed to pay some attention to something… anything!

Losing things:
It’s not unusual for folks of the senior persuasion to lose things. In fact, folks of almost every age lose things, but as we get older, it becomes almost funny…to the younger set. To be honest, losing things such as car keys and shoes really doesn’t bother me much, but losing words can be distressing. While I was still working, I noticed that I started losing nouns, specifically proper nouns. Names seemed to be the first to go. I’ve spent many an uncomfortable moment making small talk while trying to find someone’s name in my mental junk drawer. Of course, proper noun failure naturally progresses on to plain old nouns and even to improper nouns.
I was talking to a fella last week and wanted to tell him about a shotgun I’d bought. All I could tell him was, “shoot.” That moron wasn’t much better off than I was because all he came up with was “arrow, dice, camera,” and “your mouth off.”  As much as I hate losing nouns, the thought of losing adjectives and pronouns bothers me more, and there are some verbs I’m really quite fond of.

Painting the house:
A few years ago, we painted a couple of rooms, the foyer, and the hall. The rooms were fairly easy and straightforward, the foyer and stairs was exciting to say the least but the hall presented its own unique problems. Our hall must have hundreds of pictures on its walls. There are dozens of pictures of every kid we ever had, which is one. There are dozens of pictures of every grandkid we ever had, which are two. There are dozens of pictures of Avon and her family, and there are several pictures of me.
It all makes a nice display, and I like them there. The problems came when I started to take them down to paint, I didn’t think I could ever get them all back up in their proper places. I was struck with the brilliant idea of taking pictures of the pictures. That way I’d have a positive record of their placement. The next problem arose when I started putting those pictures back up. I guess I should’ve used a digital camera instead of film, or at least marked that roll of film so I’d recognize it among those other rolls of undeveloped film in the drawer.

Terms that bewilder:

One of the terms that has always confused and confounded me is “Cat Burglar”. Would that refer to a thief that steals cats or does refer to a cat that steals? Moreover, just what would a cat steal? They don’t need anything. There’s always someone willing to take care of them and pamper them whether they appreciate it or not. Could a cat steal enough of anything to make it worth the effort? An average sized cat isn’t big enough to carry even a small TV or a laptop.

Close to home:
Yesterday, my grandson told me that he has always been able to talk himself out of trouble. I tried not to show approval of such talent, but I knew where that came from. Had I not been able to do the same thing, I might have been in Alcatraz by the fourth grade. I didn’t have great excuses or alibis, but I kept talking until I just plain wore them out and they gave up.

Why I Carry a Note Pad and a Pencil:
I was sitting in the waiting room of the doctor’s office, hoping they’d have an emergency and change my appointment date, when a local character, Clyde Meadows came in. He hobbled over and sat down next to me. I remembered Clyde from years ago when he skinned me on a horse purchase. But I didn’t mind because he was a horse trading legend in these parts, and I figured that I’d been skinned by the best. Clyde had been a bronc rider and a bull rider in his day, and when he wasn’t riding bull he was spreading it. So he started talking.
Like many of us, when we get older, Clyde had a hearing problem and compensated by speaking two disciples louder than a jet engine. He told me about all the bones he’d had broken over his life time. I asked how he came to have so many.
And he said, “Son, I’ve fallen off of or out of almost everything I’ve ever been on or in… I’ve fallen off broncs, bulls, motorcycles, bicycles, roofs, snowmobiles, and ostriches…” Clyde had the attention of everyone in the waiting room. “I’ve fallen out of cars, windows, pickups, jeeps, boats, hay wagons, box cars, beds, and trees.”
A young fella who had been whining about the sniffles before Clyde came in, decided to embarrass the old boy and get back into the limelight. “What about women?” he asked.

Clyde thought for a few seconds and said… “No, I don’t reckon I’ve fallen from one of those yet… but I’m only 86 years old… there’s still plenty of time.”

So what’s changed?
The other day, I was complaining about being too tiered too quickly. I told Avon that I’d be hard pressed to work a full 8-hour day anymore. Then it occurred to me, that my bosses were hard pressed to get a full 8-hours out of me in days gone by.

Things you can only learn through experience:
Pipe tobacco does not taste near as good as it smells.
Some cheeses taste much better than they smell.
You can cook with olive oil spray, but you can’t season your food with pepper spray.
