What’s in a name?

Johnny Cash had a huge hit record called a Boy named Sue, in which he lamented the problems of a name like that. Well, I’m here to tell you life ain’t easy for a boy named Lou either. For one thing you start out with the dreadful name of Louis, which is what every relative you’ve ever known will call you for the rest or your life. Once you start school the kids will call you Louie, which is okay for a little kid, but no one will ever take a Louie seriously. My middle initial is E. and with every substitute teacher I could just plan on winding up in the principal’s office because she would invariably run Louis and te E together and make it Louise. Then just like with Johnny Cash’s song the fight would start when someone laughed.
Eventually you survive your school years and start work only to find that Louie is not well received very seriously in business meetings or boardrooms, so you have to reinvent yourself all over again and that’s how you become a Lou. In the span of my life I have also been called Lucifer, Loopie Loo, Lucy, Loubee, Luthor, Lois, Loo (referring to an English rest room), Lu Lu and Loose Change all of which I bore with a smile because if they didn’t like me they wouldn’t abuse me. For the record no one takes a Lou very seriously either – I don’t.

Life is much too important to be taken seriously.”

Thoughts:

Through the years I have said many things  (I) thought were profound after I heard myself say them. Of course most of you know that I would never consider thinking about things before I say them. I’m going to start sharing some of those profundities not to be confused with profanities under the heading of Truths: To avoid charges of plagiarism if it isn’t one of mine I’ll give credit.

Truths:
Youth: A state of maturity when one believes that one will live forever, but drives like one doesn’t want to.

Another true story:
When cell phones were first becoming popular one of my colleagues of somewhat dubious character showed me a phone he had gotten on the black market. He claimed it was stolen and that it only cost him $100… a bargain? He had that thing to his ear constantly for about a week then it went dead and a message came up to call a certain number. He panicked thinking that if he called the number they would be able to trace the stolen phone and arrest him, so he wiped all the prints off of it and put it in a city park trash bin. On reflection what he had was a cheap pay-as-you-go phone with some minutes on it worth maybe $30. This only proves what P.T. Barnum said, “You can’t cheat an honest man.” and “There’s one (a sucker) born every minute”. My colleague wasn’t with us very long.

The little rat:

I believe we a mouse in our house, and I think he must be pretty advanced for a mouse. Last week he got into the pantry, opened a bag of chips, ate half of them, and then put a bag clip on it. The next night he got into the refrigerator and had some ice cream, and left his bowl in the sink. The following night he finished the chips then looked at the clock and saw it was Miller time so he had a beer. The lovely Avon went ballistic and had me setting traps all over the place. She won’t catch him though because I know where the traps are.

It is what it is:

Yesterday as I was coming out of the pharmacy at one of local Mercy clinics I noticed that my shoe was untied, so I propped it up on a waste can there in the lobby and tied it. A very OLD man was sitting on a couch watching me. I told him, “When I was younger I could bend over and tie them, but now they have to meet me half way.” He started laughing and got tickled, then he pointed to his own feet and between spasms of giggle said, “Velcro!” Then he started laughing all over again. I left him laughing and figured that it would either add a few months to his life or kill him right there on that fake leather couch. He didn’t seem to care which.

Did you know?

Did you know that the song Yellow Rose of Texas was written about a mulatto prostitute? She was keeping Generalissimo Santa Ana occupied in the middle of the afternoon; he had given orders that NO ONE should disturb him. Meanwhile the Texican (that’s what they called themselves) forces snuck across the river and attacked the camp winning a major victory and in effect the war.

It was a test:
A few months back I wrote about wanting to train my 8 remaining fingers to scrape things like my right thumbnail does. I was expecting to get a ton of emails saying that the number should be 9; you people aren’t paying attention!

Smile factor:
One of the things that causes a smile to appear on my face is when a police car passes me. That means he didn’t find anything wrong with my driving or my vehicle. I always figure that I must be doing something either unsafe or stupid or both and if a cop looks hard enough he can find it.

 Did you know:

Did you know that the buttons on a man’s suit coat sleeve, which fasten nothing, were first put there hundreds of years ago by the Czarina or Czarress – Mrs. Czar of Russia’ who was upset at seeing her personal guards wipe their noses on their sleeves.

Did you Ever:

Did you ever wake up after a poor nights sleep only to find that your face wasn’t right? Oh, the muscles seemed to work okay, but the parts weren’t where they should be. Your nose was a little too far to the left, your mouth was somewhere near you ear, and your eyes were scattered about. There have been times when I couldn’t even locate my chin. I’ve tried pushing and prodding and shoving the parts into place, but nothing seemed to work as well as a good strong cup of coffee.

And one more:  Road trip # 11

I’ve posted this one before, but it’s one of my favorites, and it happened on the same trip… so here goes. It was downtown Cody Wyoming, where I ran across an old Indian sitting on a bench. So I sat down to spend a few restful moments talking to him. He told me he had grown up as a Shoshone on a reservation his people shared with the Cheyenne. The Cheyenne were trying to get the Shoshone people removed from the reservation because the argued that the Shoshone blood had been thinned too much to qualify as Indians. The argument raged on and on, until one old Shoshone stood up and said, “The Cheyenne bloodlines may be stronger, but the only thing that proves is that the Cheyenne women are so ugly that even the White Man won’t have them.  The discussion was over.
I didn’t know if I’d been insulted or not… but it was damned funny.

Rocky Mountain National Park:  Road trip #11
Getting into RMNP is almost as much fun as the park itself. The trip from Loveland to Estes Park is a post card photo at every turn. Once you get into Estes Park all hell breaks loose. Estes Park is Wall Drug, Dolly Wood, Branson, and Disney World all crammed into a narrow canyon with Manhattan style traffic. I’m afraid that many people come for the hoopla in Estes Park and miss most of the rugged beauty of the real park. We didn’t miss it – it was awesome!

I nearly got into a fistfight with an attendant at a Visitor Center near Vail, CO for referring to Rocky Mountain National Park as Estes Park. As a true arrogant Coloradoan, he wouldn’t believe that most of the country didn’t know one from the other. He also wouldn’t believe that the Tetons were just as picturesque and maybe more so. I just kicked him in the shin and hid out in the ladies room.

Another name thing:   Road trip #10
I always thought they were called hairpin curves because they were shaped like a hairpin or bobby pin. I found out that the similarity goes even farther than that. Hairpin curves work the same way as their namesakes. After winding through some of those mountain roads with nothing on the left but a rock wall, and nothing to the right but a couple of thousand feet of drop off Avon’s hair would stay curly for days.

What’s in a nomenclature?
Old Faithful is a geyser that does its thing on a regular basis for a long time. A geezer is just a regular old guy – with emphasis on “old”. So, does that make Old Faithful a geezer geyser? You saw that one coming didn’t you.

Idaho:    Road trip # 9
We (I) loved Idaho. It has mountains, rivers, deserts, and very few people. It is a little short on entertainment though. A typical Saturday night date in Salmon, ID would be load your girl into your 4 WD pick up and drive downtown to watch the stop sign. There could be as many as 8 couples waiting to see that sign do something. There must be some romantic implications there that I didn’t understand.

Idaho also has Sun Valley, which is the only blemish on an otherwise flawless face. Sun Valley, a noted ski area, is a magnet to the well-healed and pretty people. There were pretty men, pretty women, pretty children, cars, cats, and dogs. Each person there was prettier than the one before him or her, with the exception of yours truly – of course. Those people were so impressed with themselves that they spent most of their time and efforts sucking up to themselves. They would pay outrageous prices to have pretty guides take them on river floats in streams that were mere shadows of the streams a few miles farther away. We didn’t even wait around for the complimentary breakfast – come sun up we were gone.

Rewards:

Hiking in the rain is no fun. Hiking in the rain and cold is no fun minus some fun, which makes it a negative or anti-fun. We were in the middle of a 2 mile uphill anti-fun hike at Glacier National Park in the clouds for the second time determined to make it or else. We made it and had time for one picture before the clouds closed in again and obliterated the lake I was trying to shoot. On the way down, I would tell folks going up to take heart because they had coffee, hot chocolate, and cinnamon rolls at the top. It really seemed to quicken their steps. I wonder how anti-happy those people were with me when they reached the top.

Yellowstone Drivers:  Road trip #7
People go to Yellowstone for its beauty, grandeur, and wildlife. After several hours of beauty and grandeur, they become fanatic about seeing wildlife. If they don’t happen to spot a moose or a bear, they get passionate over anything wearing fur. I’ve seen times when a chipmunk could cause a 40-vehicle standstill in both directions, or a field mouse could put an SUV in a ditch. I tend to think that the mooses and the bears were hiding back in the woods sending the chipmunks and field mice out so that they could all laugh their furry butts off.
As we were leaving Yellowstone, we were following a large RV that suddenly slammed on his breaks. I told Avon that it must be a ground squirrel sighting. As the RV pulled into the left lane, I could see that right in front of us was a huge bull buffalo just strolling down the middle of the right lane. As we moved over to pass him, we came so close that I told Avon to reach out, scratch his cheek, and call him Sweetie. She didn’t.

Small doses:  Road trip # 6

On another hike, this time in the Tetons of Wyoming, Avon and I fell in with a bus tour group. They were a fun bunch and I was doing my best impression of being the entertainer of the year. We laughed for 700 feet up hill and 700 feet down hill. When we parted, Avon commented that it would be fun to travel with a bunch like that. I told her that it would be great for about the first 100 miles, at which point they would be trying to find a way to get me off that bus.

The obvious doesn’t need stating:
Clinging to an eyebrow of a road above the timberline (roughly 11,000 feet) is serious business and no time for fools. We were doing just that; moving around a mountain to the right. There was nothing to the left but a world of emptiness and a lot of it. As we practically scraped the rock wall going around a corner, we saw a highway sign telling us, “NO LEFT TURN.”

Road Trip... #5
Bad Lands?
Somewhere near the above-mentioned Bone, WY, we encountered the Devil’s Half Acre, which is actually about 400 acres. It had all the features of a badland landscape, but it was very small in scale. Therefore, I determined that it was not a badland but a naughtyland.

Pucker up:

Have you ever kissed a goat? Well, I could have while hiking in the Montana rain. Coming around a bend, I came face to face with a large, white, and very hairy female mountain goat. Either of us could have initiated a smooch had we been so inclined. She didn’t seem to be too thrilled, and I was a bit put off by nanny goat breath.

Who names those places?  Road trip #4

Some of the town names we ran across left me scratching my head. I can’t seem to accept some things at face value, and need to know what is behind it.
Crazy Head Springs, MT: Now where else would one be crazy but in the head? Maybe the crazy bone in the elbow but that’s a stretch.
Boys, MT: That’s all well and good for a weekend, but without some girls that place can’t last long.
New Underwood, MT: It was a town sitting out there all alone and not an Old Underwood in sight.
Ralph, MT:  This was one of my favorites – just plain Ralph.
Sheet House Creek, ID: I wonder what the name used to be, and what was that creek used for? Trust me, I wouldn’t drink the water.
Chugwater, WY: This town was only a couple of hundred miles from Golden, CO and the Coors brewery, so I find it hard to believe that water was the only thing they had to chug.
There were several towns that weren’t towns. The sign would give the elevation, but the population read 0. There were no people and no buildings.
Bone, WY: It was just an empty place along the highway. I can only imagine that a Godzilla sized dog came along and buried Bone.

Powder, WY: Like Bone, there was nothing there but a sign at each end of what might have been the city limits. I doubt that it took much of a wind to blow Powder across the high plains.

High Plains Pharmacy:

For 400 miles in all directions, you can see signs advertising Wall Drug Store. The last time we were there (33 years ago) we didn’t stop – this time we had to. They advertised free ice water and nickel coffee along with every other thing imaginable. We found Wall Drugs to be at least a full square block (maybe more) of outrageousness. They had every form of souvenir junk that Japan, China, or Taiwan ever manufactured. They had an in-house tattoo parlor, beauty shop, dentist office, and a full sized dinosaur skeleton.  When we walked out, I walked right into a bunch of Sturgis leftovers and told them, “Boys, I’ve been to Gatlinburg, Branson, and Wall Drug. I’ve seen it all, and I can die a happy man.”

Road trip… # 2  Sturgis:

Sturgis, SD is the home of the world’s largest motorcycle rally – about a half a million bikes. We were surrounded by them for the first 2 days, with bikes going both ways. Those lawyers and CPAs never travel alone. They travel in packs of 8 to 14, and they are all dressed in black jeans, black scull or eagle tee shirts, and leather. I estimated about $100,000 worth of leather per 20 miles. Marlin Brando must be very proud to have spawned so many character wannabees.

From the editor:
A few years back, Avon and I spent about a month traveling the northern mountain states. It was one of our best trips ever – a regular second honeymoon but without all those tears. I couldn’t seem to stop crying on the first one. Anyway, brace yourselves because you’re going to get a synopsis of the trip from my own somewhat askew prospective. We didn’t give ourselves a time limit, but figured we’d have to come home when we collapsed or when the plastic cards did. LB, editor
This may take a few weeks just to tell about it.

South Dakota:
South Dakota is a featureless land with few exceptions. One of those would be the Corn Palace in Mitchell. The thing is a monstrosity shaped like a Russian Orthodox Church, which hides the fact that it is a gymnasium. The outside and the inside are covered with murals all made from corn. That’s correct… corn. They use everything out of the cornfield except the weeds. It’s really well done and should be seen – once. If they ever have a fire there, Mitchell and the surrounding countryside will be 3 feet deep in popcorn. When you leave the Corn Palace, there are about 350 miles of horizon until you reach Mt. Rushmore, the Black Hills, and Sturgis.

The Ice Age of 09:

Back in of 2009 the Ozarks has endured yet another major ice storm and we were fortunate to have survived that one without the massive power failures. There were many who couldn’t get out and had no place to go if they could, so they just kicked back and stayed warm inside the house. What are the consequences of this kind of natural occurrence you ask? Well there would be a good deal of lost man/woman hours, some loss of retail sales, and higher heating bills. But in October of 2009 the maternity wards at the local hospitals were be booming.

Truths:
Aging :     I’ve stored a lot of knowledge over the years, and the password to my database is safe, but I forgot where I put it.

Economics: A person with foolish spending habits often has more dollars than sense.

Personality: An ego the size of Texas can’t cover your shortcomings from anyone but yourself.

Hmmmm!:
The lovely Avon has an activity, which she looks forward to every month. She and a group of lady friends all get together to eat desserts, laugh, probably gossip, and play BUNKO. Right off the bat, the name of that game sounds criminal. There used to be a radio crime program called Bunko Squad, in which the police fought and arrested a bunch of gangsters (yes, children we watched police stories on the radio). Every month they move the game to another lady’s home. The whole thing sounded vaguely familiar, so I searched my memory and came up with the answer. Back when I was making a serious effort to miss-spend my youth and my paychecks; we had a similar activity. We didn’t call it BUNKO, we called it a Floating Crap Game, and there were no desserts.

The Name Game:
My sister got caught up in the name thing and discovered that after all these years she didn’t know where my name came from. Sis, I was named for an old Blue-Tick hound that Uncle Ed had.

Patience:
Lately, Avon has been showing a great deal of patience towards me, but unfortunately she isn’t exactly extending much of it towards me.
