Physical Fitness and Health:

 I thought that I might be starting to get a little out of shape, but on closer study realized that I have always been a physical wreck. Even with that knowledge at hand I felt I should at least give it a try, so I did some reading and watched some old Jack laLanne videos and felt I was ready to take the plunge. I worked myself into a state of full-blown fitness obsession and did a push up, and found exercise to be highly overrated! That’s the kind of stuff that could kill a person.

From the Editor:

          As the Ice Age of 2016 slowly recedes into Canada and the Arctic we start thinking about another spring and summer coming on (you folks in California please ignore).  It’s time to start sharpening mower blades, hoes, shovels, and drag out tillers. Kinda makes one long for the good old days of sitting by the fire and relaxing, doesn’t it?

         

From the old mail bag:   This came to me from Dennis in Michigan… 

          It seems Dennis was standing in line at Toys or Us when a lovely young blonde came running up to the counter pushing people aside, and asked if she would get a prize or a certificate or something.

          “Why would you think there should be a prize?” he asked.

          “Because I finished this puzzle in only 3 months…” she said.

          “And?” he queried.

          She held up the box and said,

          “See… right here on the box, it says… ‘2 to 4 years.”

I’m just wondering if I finished it in 6 months, what kind of prize I would get?

The extra gallon:

          Have you ever been painting a room or area that you’ve painted before, and you know that it will take at least 2 gallons of paint? When your wife asks how much paint you’ll need you tell her what you know to be a fact. She then asks if you measured the square footage to be sure. With a little white lie you say, “Of course, this isn’t my first rodeo, you know!” You’ve been wanting to say that since you first heard it. Her reply is, “Okay, cowboy, if you’re sure.”  When the project is finished and you still have that extra can of paint that hasn’t been opened you start looking at your options. They won’t take it back because it was a custom color mix, so you look for a place to hide it where she will never find it because you don’t want to hear any “cowboy” remarks. At one time I had my own safe deposit box to hide my miscalculations. Now, I have a full sized storage unit.

On the Beach  part 4   Heading home.

          Cruising home was like always, I was driving, and Avon was in her position as captain of the ship/navigator/armrest grabber. She gave all the directions, read the signs, and gave the alarms. All I do is hold the steering wheel and work the pedals. Coming through one of those small southern towns we were pulling up to a traffic signal with multiple lanes. She directed me to the center lane, and pointed to the right she said, “You don’t want to go over there that’s a turn signal lane.”

That’s an Avonism! She knew it as soon as she had said it, but I wasn’t going to let it go without comment and a good laugh. She asked if that was going to find its way into my blog, I confirmed that it would. She then said, “You’d better let me see it before you post it. I’m going to go over it with a fine tooth and comb.” Again, she knew it as soon as she had said it but too late. It was the first time I had ever had an Avonism double. It was a high water mark.

On the Beach    Part 3   Alabama coast 

          At end of our week in Alabama, a wondrous thing happened. It became the weekend, which happens almost every week I’m told, but also the weather became unseasonably warm. That was the signal for all the folks in Mobile to pour out of their offices, shops, and schools to head for the beaches. The previously almost deserted beaches were suddenly filled with folks having fun. Volleyball nets magically grew out of the sand and activity in every direction. There were string bikinis stuffed with young ladies enjoying temperatures in the 80s, whereas all week the swimwear had been stuffed with ladies in their 80s, who didn’t seem to be enjoying anything. Everyone seemed to know everyone else because they were all shouting, “Hawyall?”, which I took to be a question from their tone. The other folks seemed to understand it because they would yell it right back at them, and say some other stuff that I couldn’t make heads nor tails of.

          The fun wasn’t limited to the beaches. There was plenty of it out on the fairways and greens. There was one particular course that I had played about 10 years earlier. At that time, I shanked a ball left to the edge of the water on a par 3 hole. When I went to find the ball and reached down to get it out of the mud, I saw that a six-foot long alligator a few feet away also had an interest in my ball. I figured that his interests were stronger than mine and backed away quickly. This time, when I came to that same tee, I took my ball and threw it as far to the right as I could. I took a double bogie, but I still had both my hands.

On the Beach: Part 3   Alabama coast. 

          Our condo was full of big old men. These were men, who you just knew were able to break 2 x 4s with their bare hands in their prime. It seemed that each one was leading around some little puffball of a critter, which he considered to be a dog. It was a sad thing to watch. I vowed that if I ever got a pet, it wouldn’t be a sissy dog. No, in fact I’ve been searching the Internet for some place that sells grizzly bears or alligators.

          Strolling the beach on the Alabama coast, we encountered a man in a BAMA tee shirt. He said, “Yall doin’alright this moanin’?” I replied with, “Just fine thank you and yourself?” All I got was a cold stare. Avon whispered, “I think you were supposed to say Roll Tide.” Later on, we met a man wearing an AU tee shirt. He said, “Moanin’ yall.” So I responded with, “Roll Tide.” This time the cold stare was an icy glare. How was I supposed to know that UA stood for Alabama and AU stood for Auburn? Give me a break – I’m from Missouri for Pete’s sake.

On the Beach ... Part 3

          On the beaches, we saw numerous Jellyfish washed up on the shore. I thought they needed to change the name to something like Ugly-Yucky Fish. I had nightmares of spreading Jellyfish on my morning toast.

          Once while walking on the beach, she told me that I was blocking the sun from her legs. I told her that if she were in her proper place it wouldn’t happen. I just didn’t know when to shut up because I went on to tell her that her proper place was 10 paces behind me.... Ouch!!

          We were watching some college-aged guys in their wetsuits doing all kinds of stunts on boogie boards. Avon asked if I’d like to try that. I told her, “I’d just as soon throw myself from the balcony of our condo and break my own neck. That way I’d save the cost of the boogie board and wetsuit.”
